The Governor's Legal Counsel is currently not reviewing any applications for pardons or commutations for currently incarcerated inmates. The decision was likely made largely because of the actions of Governor Bryant's predecessor, Haley Barbour. On his last day in office, Barbour granted full and unconditional pardons to 193 criminals. This resulted in a massive outcry from Mississipians. Read more about this by clicking here.

There is no official application for a commutation of sentence. A letter or petition requesting a commutation should be sent to

The Honorable Phil Bryant
Governor, State of Mississippi
Office of the Governor
P.O. Box 139
Jackson, MS 39205-0139

The extenuating circumstances which support the basis of the clemency request should be specified. Applicants may include letters of recommendation in support of the request from sources such as neighbors, employers, co-workers, pastors, church members, elected officials, judges, prosecutors, family members, etc.

Legal counsel for the Governor is currently not reviewing any applications for clemency for currently incarcerated inmates. Applications are filed and may be reviewed later should the Governor or future governors decide applications for inmates should begin to be reviewed again.

In theory, if an application were reviewed and the Governor believed it merited further inquiry, he or she would refer the application to the State Parole Board to conduct an investigation. Whatever the recommendation of the State Parole Board, any decision on an application would be exclusively the Governor's.
